History

Bethany Community Ministries (BCM) was founded in 2000 out of a bold vision rooted in faith, service, and love for the Homewood community.

When many saw Homewood only through the lens of hardship, Pastor William R. Glaze and the leadership of Bethany Baptist Church saw potential, purpose, and people worth investing in. Through a church-wide campaign called A Time to Soar, the congregation raised the funds to open the Bethany Center — a three-level facility that became a safe haven for neighbors in need. What began as Diakonia Ministries soon grew into what is now Bethany Community Ministries.

From the beginning, BCM has been powered by volunteers. Programs like Master’s Kitchen, The Storehouse Food Pantry, and The Shawl Project all began with individuals who saw a need and said “yes.” Their faithful service laid the foundation for a ministry committed to meeting basic needs with dignity and compassion.

Over the years, BCM expanded its reach — serving thousands of hot meals, providing food and essential items to families, and investing deeply in children through youth and educational programs, including the DiSYPles Summer Program and pandemic-era Learning Hubs.

During COVID-19, BCM not only stayed open but expanded — growing meal service dramatically and leading one of Pittsburgh’s first grassroots vaccination efforts. To date, more than 10,000 vaccinations have been administered through BCM’s Health Equity work.

In recent years, that commitment has grown to include Healthy Aging Hubs, creating welcoming spaces where older adults can connect, learn, and thrive — reducing isolation and supporting health with dignity and care.

Today, BCM is a trusted partner across Pittsburgh and a catalyst for long-term transformation in Homewood. Guided by faith, strengthened by partnerships, and sustained by generous donors and volunteers, BCM continues its mission to stay, to serve, and to love — just as it has for more than 25 years.
